Cow Government

Feudalism: You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk.

Pure Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. The government gives you a glass of milk.

Bureaucratic Socialism: Your cows are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and eggs as the regulations say you should need.

Fascism: You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them and sells you the milk.

Pure Communism: You share two cows with your neighbors. You and your neighbors bicker about who has the most "ability" and who has the most "need." Meanwhile, no one works, no one gets any milk, and the cows drop dead of starvation.

Russian Communism: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk. You steal back as much as you can and sell it on the black market.

Perestroika: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the Mafia takes all the milk. You steal back as much milk as you can and sell it on the "free market."

Cambodian Communism: You have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you.

Pure Democracy: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk.

Representative Democracy: You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk.

Bureaucratic Democracy: You have two cows. At first the government regulates what you can feed them and when you can milk them. Then it pays you not to milk them. Bankers' Capitalism: You don't have any cows. The bank will not lend you money to buy cows, because you don't have any cows to put up as collateral.

The development of pop music in China over two decades tells a story of the country, the times and social changes, and now Hong Kong and Taiwan have become the major sources of music for young music fans from the mainland.

In the late 1970s, popular music artists were few. The only pop artist of that time was Teresa Teng. Today this has changed. Rock-and-roll musicians abound, and young people can choose from a huge selection of modern music styles and artists.

In the early 1980s, criticism about the "unhealthy" content of popular music made conservative-minded people sneer at people who listened to what they called "soft soap" music. Today, hundreds of bands perform in clubs and bars across the country, hoping to be discovered by a music company so that they can make an album of their own.

Someone said 90 percent of the music companies in China rely on buying the copyrights to music from Hong Kong, Taiwan or overseas to generate the bulk of their profit. That is, few of these companies produce original music.

But there is wide support in China for the development of original music. Both artists and business people in the industry believe that the market can stimulate the creation and production of the music industry.

Popular music in China was born in the late 1970s with changes to the rhythm and melody of songs. Softness and lightness were added to the tune.

The songs of that age had themes of social responsibility, singing the praises of navy soldiers who guarded the country's shores, or the beauty of the motherland. The soft, sweet singing of Teresa Teng soothed the people.

"Teng sang every song she could, from old Chinese melodies to American rock-and-roll," said one critic. "Teng put her stamp on every song she sang. And every song became soft and sweet."

But the social environment of that time was not very tolerant. Young people who wore bell-bottomed pants, big sunglasses and carried tape recorders were viewed as "hooligans". And the music they listened to was labeled "decadent".

Nothing could stop young people's passion for the trend and fashion. Cheng Lin, Cheng Fangyuan and Zhang Xing became the most popular singers of that time.

Cheng Lin was introduced to the audience by a composer from Taiwan, who also introduced a series of Taiwan pop songs to the mainland. At that time, ballads were popular in Taiwan and the trend quickly came to the mainland. Taiwan songwriters like Lo Tayu and Li Zongsheng became familiar to the mainland audience.

Western music first started to infiltrate China in the late 1970s (My father got his first English album called "The Beatles Collection" in 1979, of course it was a piracy one ). But fans of English-language songs only came out as a group in the mid-80s. The first foreign voice that captivated the Chinese audience was Karen Carpenter.

College students recorded her songs from one tape to another, spreading her voice further and further. A widely-used English-language teaching textbook even took one of her songs in a listening text. Her sound sharply contrasted the styles familiar to the Chinese audience. Her singing voice was simple and genuine, and not as "namby-pamby" as Teresa Teng's.

By the late 1980s, tapes of English songs were available in the Chinese market, though a large number of them were pirated. (The first English song I heard was "Careless Whisper" by George Michael when I was 6 yrs old in 1988, I still like it very much now! )

Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, the Beatles, and John Denver were introduced to China. The radio stations gave more time to Western music, and audiences were called on to supply tapes for the program.

Since the mid-80s, singers and actors from Hong Kong and Taiwan have participated in the annual Spring Festival Party, which is broadcast to the whole country via TV.

Hong Kong and Taiwan have become major sources of music for young fans from the mainland. And as communications became easier and more frequent, talented young singers from the mainland went to Hong Kong to further develop their careers. Faye Wong is the best example. She was a native of Beijing and started singing songs of Teresa Teng's. She moved to Hong Kong where her career as the most successful contemporary Chinese singer took off.

Rock-and-roll started to take off between the late 1980s and early 1990s, taking a rebellious attitude toward the highly commercial music industry. Cui Jian (May 9th, 2006 is the 20th anniversary of his first song "Nothing Left" debuted) became the "spiritual godfather" of the "angry young men".

Globalization is an unstoppable trend nowadays. Accompanied by campaigns against piracy, this trend is intermingling music and film from all over the world. Radio stations no longer need to look around for things to play, music companies supply them with all the latest albums.

American, Japanese, Korean music all find large numbers of fans among teenagers in China. Rap, R&B, soul, techno, whatever trend starts to gain popularity on the global stage, quickly comes out in a localized version.

Band of Brothers | 兄弟连

剧情回顾 + 评论

经典的史诗性电视剧,惟此电视剧陪伴我度过一生。

它讲述了美国101空降师506团2营E连从1942年组建到1945年解散期间的经历。这支部队的建立是美国在欧洲和太平洋开辟战场的重要一环,因为在几次关键战役中,101师都起了不可或缺的作用,其中以E连的功劳最大。而此片以记实、回忆、叙述穿插的手法,客观、深刻地表现了战争的残酷以及士兵在战争中的心理变化。

Band of Brothers,是我唯一一部看了超过20遍的电视剧。此片的吸引力不仅仅在于它真实的场面,更重要的是客观的叙事,鲜活的人物和深刻的主题。有别于其他英雄主义的战争电影,它所极力刻画的是战争的残酷与愚昧,使观者看清战争的本质,从而痛恨战争,另外这种特殊因为战争结成的友情最为我所倾慕。

影片每一集都会有一到两名线索人物,每一集的拍摄手法也都有不同:

1 Currahee

科拉希是印地安语中“加油”的意思,是E连的兄弟们加油打气的口号。作为第一集的标题,它包含了E连从组建到D日的整个过程,更象征着E连团结不屈的精神。

作为全剧的开篇,它以倒叙的形式叙述了E连从组建到D日的时间段,是10集中时间跨度最大的一集,剧情环环紧扣。它的线索人物有两个,一个是E连的第一任连长赫伯特·索贝尔和后来E连的灵魂人物理查德·温特斯。本集开场就是气氛紧张的D日前夕,接着通过回忆再现了他们艰苦的训练,对魔鬼连长的刻画,以及温特斯在连里逐渐树立威信的过程。客观来说,没有索贝尔的超严格要求以及他吹毛求疵的性格,就不会有如此团结的E连,就连再恨他的士兵都不得不承认是他造就了E连,这在以后的作战中也得到充分体现。最终,索贝尔在同温特斯的斗争中失败,失去了E连,原因很简单,虽然他只是在做分内之事,可他没有真心关爱他的士兵,没有尊重他们,也就没有得到他们的尊重,相反温特斯在这点比他强太多。记得一个场景,温特斯教训“山羊”康普顿和士兵玩色子赌博,山羊很不以为然,温特斯只是说“如果你赢了怎么办?千万不要给自己任何机会去占士兵的便宜。”


① 二等兵戈登被索贝尔罚从山顶跑来回,当他跑到半路几乎快跌倒的时候,3个自愿陪他受罚的同伴从身后将他扶起,慢慢4个、5个……

② 驶向英国的轮船开动,这是大多数人第一次离开祖国,望着渐行渐远的自由女神像,方才意识到原来不曾在意的东西,现在却变得如此珍贵。

③ 索贝尔在演习中表现出的神经质对比温特斯的沉着冷静。

④ 索贝尔在辛克上校告知他将被调离E连时欲哭无泪的眼神。

⑤ D日登上飞机前,那一张张心事重重的脸,人人都担心自己能否活到明天,最后温特斯坐在机舱门口,镜头越拉越远,一架飞机也只是茫茫天地的沧海一角。

2 Day of Days

本集集中再现了D日登陆,以及整个6月6日的战斗情景。本集的线索人物依然是温特斯。 一开场的紧张气氛就让人窒息,接下来没停过一分钟的枪炮声把本集乃至全剧都推上高潮。炮火毫不隐讳地展示它的淫威,导演也毫不掩饰地展现巨额投资的效果。激烈、紧张、血腥,它的内容和画面集结了一切优秀战争电影的元素。真正的战斗从此开始。

这集引入了全剧最大的一个谜团——斯皮尔斯屠杀战俘的事件。导演并没有对此事做出任何完整描述,在第2、3、7集中都是以传言的形式或他人的主观想法将它拼凑“完整”,至于真实与否,影片没有给出明确的答案。斯皮尔斯却因为这起事件演变成传奇,甚至全剧的核心人物之一(第七集证实了我对斯皮尔斯的关注是正确的,并且成为我最喜欢的人物,他让我激情四溢,他的勇猛每次看到都会让我心动过速,虽然温特斯是最完美的)。总的来说,本集是全剧最精彩的高潮之一,每分钟都使观者神经紧绷,真实的战争场面不禁令人惊叹震撼。


① 开场就是德军对飞机狂轰,仿佛自己就置身于那里,直到温特斯跳出机舱后令人晕眩的摇晃镜头。

② 接着,温特斯遇见A连的通讯兵霍尔,霍尔埋怨自己把通讯设备弄丢了,温特斯对他说:“如果你在我的排,你首先是一名步兵,然后才是通讯兵。”霍尔惊讶于温特斯杰出的作战领导能力,决定跟着他战斗。可是在夺取阵地、摧毁大炮的行动中牺牲(收入西点最经典战术)。后来温特斯向尼克松提起他,那种淡淡的哀伤恰当好处。

③ 瓜内尔报仇心切,不等温特斯的命令就开枪杀死了大约两马车的德国人。看到这里,我的心情很复杂也很难过,也是从这里开始,我开始厌恶一切杀戮,我恨战争!

④ 马拉其偶然遇见一位德军战俘是他的同乡,和他聊起来。也许如果不是穿着不同的军服,他们之间很多人都能成为好朋友。马拉其也算E连中比较“慈悲”的士兵了。可惜那位战俘后来被枪杀,也就是著名的“斯皮尔斯事件”。

3 Carentan

第3集讲述的是E连在登陆后攻打战略要地卡努唐的全过程,它的线索人物换成了一名普通的二等兵布莱思。

严格地来说,布莱思是名另类的士兵,他的多愁善感,仁慈怜悯,还有起初的恐惧懦弱都与传统的士兵刻画格格不入。D日,他在战壕里睡着而没有参加战斗,他喜欢仰望蓝天,他惧怕枪炮声,还因为过度恐惧紧张而患上歇斯底里失明症。他也是名不折不扣的悲剧人物,当他改变了自己,适应了战争,决心做一名勇敢的士兵时,却被狙击手击中颈部,重伤入院而没有再康复直到1948年去世。导演成功地使布莱思的性格与战争的特点形成剧烈反差,更加生动有力地表现了两者。布莱思淡蓝的大眼睛恰好配合了他忧郁的气质。


这一集的战争场面依然精彩激烈,其巷战和坦克阵地战的描写足以称之为经典。

本集以布莱思呆呆地仰望天空开始,又以马拉其帮阵亡的战友领军服作为结束,虽场面激烈,但至始至终充斥着悲伤忧郁的气氛,其侧重点开始从战争描写转向士兵心理描写。

① 第一个画面就是布莱思望着白云蓝天,一切淡雅优美,可镜头转换到地面时就是蓬乱的杂草,坠毁的战机,第一个强烈的对比揭开了“矛盾重重”本集。

② 佩尔孔蒂向布莱思伸出手,解开袖口,炫耀他的战利品——4块手表,然后说:“它们都还能走,不像他们的前任主人。”战争中人命就是最不值钱的东西。

③ 部队夜间行军,F连与E连走散,胡布勒说:“该死,F连又跟丢了。”温特斯戏谑:“这都是军官在训练时没有把士兵教好。”

④ E连进攻小镇时受到阻击,士兵躲在战壕里,温特斯发疯似地吼叫,并把他们拉起来。这是温特斯在全剧中最“疯狂”的时刻。

⑤一名德军士兵受伤,举着双手从屋里逃出,对着面前的敌人求饶:“不要杀我!不要杀我!”话音未落就被乱枪打死。

⑥ 蒂波被炸弹严重炸伤,列布格特紧紧地把他抱在怀里安慰他,“撑下去,兄弟。”

斯皮尔斯对布莱思说:“知道你为什么躲在那个战壕里吗?因为你觉得还有希望。可是你唯一的希望就是把自己当成已死的人,不带怜悯,不带同情,不带悔恨,所有的战争都靠它。”他说得镇定自若,面不改色,让人产生一股寒意。

⑧ 布莱思射死了一名远处的德军,他走过去,看见那个人也在望着天空,他的眼睛也是淡蓝深邃,只是一动不动。布莱思把一朵象征勇敢和作为德军合格伞兵标志白色绒花从那人的尸体上取下,带在了自己身上。

⑨ 结局,布莱思中弹入院,在病床上他还是用那双忧郁的眼睛望着天花板。马拉其在洗衣房领军服,女店主问他能不能帮其他没来领的人领走,善良的马拉其答应了,然后她念着一个个已经牺牲的人的名字。

4 Replacements

本集重现了空降荷兰的“市场花园”行动以及几名补充新兵融入连队的过程,线索人物是“公牛”蓝德尔曼中士和补充新兵加西亚。 这一集里,导演开始突出士兵的一些战时生活,例如老兵排斥新兵,官兵和平民的接触,士兵喝酒聚会的场景。导演也用到补充新兵这一特殊角色来表现主题,重点在于刻画他们渴望投入战斗,却又缺乏经验,第一次见到战争时的愕然与无助,再到最终看清战争的本质,从而映射出一般人对战争的观念,同时达到了一定的教育意义。

此集也通过蓝德尔曼虎口脱险的经历,生动刻画了一为外刚内柔,心思细密的排长。

本集也第一次对占领区人民对自由的向往,落魄的生活,和对法西斯的极度憎恶之情进行了描写。


① 本集开始就是瓜内尔在聚会上“教训”新兵,以及少有的讨厌鬼科布逼一名新兵交出荣誉的蓝色徽章。

② 索贝尔升为后勤长官,可E连的托科阿老兵看见他时,对其厌恶程度丝毫不减。蓝德尔曼对加西亚形容索贝尔:“哼!还那副德行!”

③ 小镇的德军撤离,E连受到小镇人民热烈欢迎,四周都是荷兰的橙色旗帜。不时有女人亲吻士兵。一位妇女刚刚亲吻了美国士兵后就被抵抗组织的人抓走,当众剃光她的头发,撕烂她的衣服,理由是她和德国人有过关系。后来E连在行军的途中又碰见一位同样的妇女,它怀里的孩子也被剃了头,并在上面画了法西斯的标志。E连的士兵给她一盒食物,她望着远去的军队,亲吻着孩子的额头。我不禁猜想是否德军也对她做过同样的事。女性在战争中总是弱势一方,却也总是首当其冲的受害者,不管是战争开始还是结束。

④ 韦伯斯特(此人与本人性格和经历最为接近)碰见一位荷兰农民,他送给他们一些食物,韦伯斯特给了农民的孩子一块巧克力,孩子贪婪地吃起来,那个农民说:“巧克力,他从没吃过。”(辅以插曲音乐,让人觉得孩子最无辜在战争中)胡布勒骂道:“去他的巴黎!”

⑤ 尼克松的钢盔被子弹打飞,温特斯急忙跑过去看他是否无恙,那一刻他们都吓坏了。

⑥ 蓝德尔曼与连队走散后,躲进一个谷仓。那里,他杀死了一名发现他的德国士兵,一个女孩惊恐地望着他,蓝德尔曼面不改色地用刀子逼着他们离开谷仓。

⑦ 尼克松看着被德军炸毁的小镇说:“明天不会有这么多橙色旗帜来欢迎我们了。”

5 Crossroads

第5集继续讲述E连在荷兰征战的事迹,从温特斯写战况报告的回忆开始,到101师进入比利时阿登山区抵御德军反攻结束。线索人物重回温特斯。 前几集中,导演花了很大篇幅把温特斯塑造成一位“英雄连长”,甚至传奇式人物,而这集开始着重对他内心世界的刻画,把温特斯从“神话人物”重新回归到有血有肉的普通人。温特斯代表着绝大多数士兵的矛盾心理。他会在惨烈的战争场面前感到压抑与不适,也会对自己杀死一名年纪很小的德国士兵久久不能释怀,还是会对巴黎的那种浮华觉得不自在,最后我们发现,温特斯依旧是原来的那个温特斯,他并没有改变,唯一不同的是战争已经在他心中留下了伤痕。导演在本集中反复强调一些镜头,其深刻寓意使之成为全剧的经典情节。

第一个经典镜头开始于第一个场景——温特斯射杀那名年轻的德军士兵。这个镜头在剧中4次出现,本集就有3次,第10集也有一次,充分说明这件事对温特斯的深刻影响。起初的画面是温特斯一人冲锋,在开阔的草地狂奔,直到与一名德军相遇。当他看见温特斯端着机枪站在面前,并没有攻击或逃跑,而是不可思议地向温特斯微笑。从他稚嫩无邪的脸庞推测这名士兵应该不到20岁,他天真的微笑却换不回自己的生命,当画面定格在温特斯举枪的一瞬间,我甚至幻想温特斯会放下武器。可是那名士兵的脸色转变,他知道了自己的命运,温特斯开枪,他也随枪声痛苦地倒下。第二次出现这个场景是在温特斯写报告时回忆的战况,这一次完整地展示了这件事的前因后果。

第二个经典镜头依然是这个场景的回忆,只是地点换成了巴黎的地铁。温特斯离开灯光绚烂的巴黎,地铁里一闪一闪的光亮以及列车压过铁轨的震动声都唤起了温特斯的战争经历,尤其是枪杀年轻德军士兵的那次。导演安排了一位貌似那名士兵的法国男孩与温特斯相遇,增强了故事的戏剧化效果,更加突出温特斯温情的一面,列车到站的时候,我看见了他的泪光在眼中闪烁。


① 恶战结束后,温特斯一个人蹲在一旁,望着尸横遍野的草地。从他眼中我感受到一名久经沙场老兵对杀戮和死亡的厌倦与无奈。

② 温特斯被提升为营指挥官,可他依然心系E连,向新连长穆斯详细询问E连作战计划,尼克松对他说:“E连会被好好照顾的。”最后他还不忘对尼克松说:“如果他们遇上什么麻烦,你要告诉我。”作战顺利完成后,E连欢呼庆祝,温特斯在窗旁欣慰地看着他们,就像一位慈爱的父亲看着自己的孩子。

③ “山羊”从医院中康复,可心理却留下了阴影,他失神地看着白白的荧幕,这也为他后来在巴斯托涅战役中的心理崩溃埋下伏笔。

④ 结尾处,E连在前往阿登山区的途中,碰见了从前线撤离的溃军,这也预示着他们将要面临的艰巨考验。

6 Bastogne

本集表现的是E连在冰天雪地的比利时巴斯托涅地区对德军反扑的抵抗。在原著中一段带过的救护兵尤金成为本集的主角,他与本集的精彩内容一起把全剧推向了另一个高潮。 (我所认识的看过此片的女生多被尤金罗医生所迷倒

寒冷、缺乏物资、被包围,E连乃至整个101师都在经受迄今为止最为严酷的考验,稍有不慎就会给连队带来灭顶之灾,甚至影响全局。在这样的背景下,高潮拉开了序幕。

引用威尔士的话,白雪皑皑的森林像七个小矮人居住的仙境。诚然,这样的场景会给人带来置身天堂的错觉,可这是不折不扣的地狱,缺少食物,弹药不足,天寒地冻,不时还有敌人的枪炮。即使这样,依然有一位天使在炮火中穿梭,拯救受伤的身体,安慰恐惧的灵魂——救护兵尤金。炮火袭来,当大家都忙于躲进伞兵坑时,尤金却要挺身而出,越危险的地方就越需要他。他见证了许多伤口,也目睹了许多战友的死亡,可他没有因此变得麻木,依旧承受着一次次精神上的摧残。

他也是孤独的,他不会叫任何人的外号,总是和大家保持一定的距离,因为他明白只有这样才能更“坦然”地面对战友的受伤或牺牲,使自己不会崩溃。他的无畏,他的坚强都让连里的兄弟们深深地喜欢他。

他还拥有一种独特的气质,忧郁。每当他一人安静地坐在角落,就会露出忧郁的眼神,也许他在回想被他救治的伤员,也许他在怀念去世的战友,也许他在思考为什么会有残忍的战争,这些都与他特殊的军职有关。本集的后半部,他的承受力已经达到临界点,他不用举枪杀人,却要时时刻刻面对死亡。

与救护站护士芮妮的相遇,让他饱受煎熬的心得到些许慰藉。我们没有亲身经历,也无法判断这是否是爱情,但她确实是尤金在战争中最美的邂逅,她能抚慰他的心灵,救护站也成了他短暂的避风港。

第6集虽没有特别激烈的战争场面,但把原本书中的“配角”刻画得深入人心,在配合对士兵艰苦生活的描写,使本集的精彩程度不亚于任何一集。

① 尤金问“贝贝”有没有剪刀:“海夫朗……”贝贝说:“我有名字,为什么不叫我的名字!”尤金一脸疑惑:“那我应该叫你什么?爱德华?”贝贝哭笑不得:“只有修女才叫我爱德华。”

② 尤金在救护站第一次遇见芮妮,她正用手抚摩伤员的额头,那名伤员对尤金说:“大夫,我仿佛置身天堂。”临走前,芮妮对尤金开朗地微笑,并送给他一块巧克力。

③ 新兵朱丽安在巡逻时脖子中弹,倒在血泊中。贝贝竭尽全力去救他,可是炮火太猛,不得不撤离,朱丽安伸着沾满鲜血的手,绝望地望着贝贝……贝贝为此内疚不已,尤金拿出了自己都不舍得吃的巧克力喂贝贝吃下去。

④ 夜晚在战壕里,另一名救护兵对尤金说:“我已经厌倦了当假大夫了!你呢?”尤金沉默不语。

⑤ 在救护站第二次遇见芮妮,她情绪很低落,尤金陪她坐在废墟边的椅子上。芮妮说:“我不想再处理伤兵了,我宁愿在肉铺里工作。”尤金说:“可你的触摸能使人镇定,这是上天给的天赋。” 芮妮含着泪:“不,这不是天赋,上帝不会给人这样的痛苦。”。

⑥ 尤金第三次见到芮妮,她发觉尤金神情恍惚,正要和他说话,就被叫去帮忙。可这成了他们最后一次相遇。

⑦ 平安夜,“山羊”向瓜内尔拿出她原女朋友的照片,黯然泪流说:“他们就是在平安夜分的手。”同时,威尔士在烤火,他说这像七个小矮人居住的仙境,没多久,火光引来炮弹,威尔士腿部受伤。

⑧ 尤金来到救护站,德军正在对小镇狂轰烂炸,救护站被彻底炸毁。尤金站在那里不敢相信眼前的事实。他发现了芮妮的蓝色头巾,把它放进兜里,缓缓离开废墟。

结尾时又一个经典镜头:尤金为贝贝包扎手上的伤口,从兜里拿出了那条蓝色头巾,他犹豫了一会又把它放回去。最终他还是拿出头巾,把它撕开,替贝贝包扎上去。贝贝说:“知道你刚才叫我什么吗?贝贝”然后继续学着尤金的口吻:“贝贝,贝贝……”尤金说:“海夫朗,注意观察前方。”镜头越拉越远,天地间一片混沌的白色。

7 The Breaking Point

第7集继续讲述E连在比利时阿登山区防御以及攻打福伊的作战情况,线索人物是利普顿上士和斯皮尔斯中尉(后半段温特斯对斯皮尔斯的火线任命成为我这一生最难忘和难以释怀的影视情节)。

本集依旧秉承巴斯托涅的白色冰雪背景,但与之不同的是巴斯托涅所突出的是酷寒和缺乏物资的恶劣条件,这一集重点放在了与德军的艰苦战斗上。本集恢弘的爆炸效果和后半部分攻打福伊激烈场面把全剧的节奏和剧情推向顶点,其精彩程度丝毫不亚于诺曼底登陆。

而这一段时期却是E连开战以来经历的最低潮,巴斯托涅累计的压力一触即发,连里几位重要老兵在这里牺牲或受伤,还有德军疯狂的炮击,甚至不称职的连长戴克也有不可推卸的责任。千钧一发的时刻,利普顿,这位来自托科阿的老兵挺身而出,他不仅在士兵、军官之间奔走,稳住士气与军心,还弥补了戴克失职给连里带来的灾难性打击。就是这个来自“小地方”的乡下人,帮助E连在最危难的关键时刻团结一心,共度难关。没有温特斯和斯皮尔斯的霸气,他多的是份平易近人,淳朴是他最宝贵的特质,未曾觐觎过连长的位置,他只想和兄弟们同甘共苦。

斯皮尔斯在第7集的戏份并不多,但绝对称得上转折性人物他在火线被温特斯提升为连长,便立刻带领E连反败为胜,除了他出色的领导、作战才能外,更重要的是他的胆识。他独自一人穿越敌军阵地的镜头造就了另一个经典和神话,如果说开始还有人对他被提升为连长有异议,那么现在也被他惊世的无畏胆识所征服。本集再次提及斯皮尔斯屠杀战俘的事件,他和利普顿对话时,导演巧妙地运用模棱两可的语言回避了一个明确的答案,使这件事和当事人一起上升为传奇。加上前面对他一些描写的拼凑,导演极力把他塑造成冷静、冷酷、冷血的“铁血”连长,理所当然,这个角色大获成功。


① 胡布勒打死一名骑马巡逻的德军士兵,得到了他梦寐以求的鲁格手枪。他四处向人炫耀,希福蒂问他那只马怎么样了,胡布勒说:“不知道,可能还在跑,希望他没事。”再次证明了人命是战争中最低贱的东西。可没一会,手枪为他的主人“报了仇”,胡布勒因为手枪走火,打断了自己的大腿动脉,不治身亡。这也许是最戏剧、最讽刺的事了。

② “戴克在哪儿?”这确实是本集出现频率最高的一句话。他靠后台关系当上E连连长,可他完全不是带兵打仗的料,来E连几个月甚至不知道士兵的一些基本情况,不做任何指示,常常丢下连队到营部,危机关头更是临阵退缩,在攻打福伊时差点让E连全军覆没。他的标志性动作就是打呵欠。

③ 斯皮尔斯一出场气氛马上变得紧张凝重,士兵们刚刚谈论完他的传说,他就来了,并问他们要不要香烟,所有人一个劲摇头,其中一个人表情超可爱。

④ 德军开始第一次轰炸,利普顿躲在伞兵坑里,笑着回忆小时侯制作炸药的事,同时另一边,托伊的腿被炸断,倒在血泊中痛苦地喊叫。不久,第二次轰炸袭来,利普顿再也笑不出来,而瓜内尔为了救托伊也被炸断腿,被抬走前依旧坚强风趣地向托伊说:“我说过我会比你先回美国的。”

⑤ “山羊”目睹了亲密战友被炸得支离破碎后彻底崩溃,他流着泪摘下自己的钢盔。最后他被送往救护站,马拉其去探望他,给他念信,他痛哭流涕。坚强勇敢的“山羊”心理再也承受不起打击,可是E连的兄弟依旧尊敬他。

⑥ 又一次轰炸中,鲁兹正奋力地爬向穆克和潘卡拉的伞兵坑,一颗炸弹就落在了坑里随即爆炸,穆克和潘卡拉就这样在鲁兹面前牺牲。随后他和利普顿躲在一个未挖完的坑里,一颗炸弹又落在他面前,幸运的是这颗是哑的。利普顿惊魂未定,从不抽烟的他拿了鲁兹嘴里的烟抽起来。马拉其也因为失去两位最好的朋友濒临崩溃。

⑦ 戴克在攻打福伊时,被猛烈的炮火吓傻了,完全不知所措,温特斯见E连正面临灭顶之灾,不顾一切拿起枪正要往前冲,辛克上校制止了他。温特斯随后命令斯皮尔斯接替戴克指挥。斯皮尔斯立刻运筹地指挥连队,扭转了战局。

⑧ 战斗过程中,E连与I连被德军阻断,失去联系,斯皮尔斯居然独自一人穿过德军阵地联络了I连,再跑回来。德军士兵几乎不敢相信眼前的事是真的。利普顿见到E连有了一位英勇的连长,再次露出灿烂的笑容。

⑨ 士兵在天堂般的教堂里休息,听着修女们天籁的歌声。利普顿清点连队的名单,牺牲或受伤的战友一个个缓缓地从镜头前消失。

⑩ 利普顿给斯皮尔斯连队名单,然后有了那次经典对话,最后,他说:“兄弟们并不在意这些故事,他们只是很高兴由你来当连长。”斯皮尔斯又说:“他们说一直有个人可以信赖,每天鼓舞大家的士气,使兄弟们聚精会神,引导方向,这全都是一名好战斗领袖做的事。那就是你。自从温特斯提升为营长后,你就是E连的领袖。”

8 The Last Patrol

本集E连来到了法国的哈根努,在那里与德军对峙两岸,这一集的线索人物是伤愈回到E连的二等兵韦伯斯特和补充军官琼斯少尉,他们有个共同点,就是拥有大学学历。

韦伯斯特是大学生,也是从托科阿来的元老,可至今还是一名二等兵,原因不是他的能力,而是他认为在基层更有利于他的经历,使他对战争有更直接的认识。他也坚持用客观冷静的角度去记录这场战争,为后来提供了很多重要的文献。韦伯斯特有着很崇高的素养和追求,他清心寡欲、淡薄名利,对很多事情有独到的见解。在韦伯斯特身上能找到道家思想的基本精髓。

琼斯少尉毕业于西点军校,和韦伯斯特一样,他也有着冷静的思想态度。没有傲气和特权思想,他也深知自己这样一名补充军官开始是不会得到多少认可的。所以他可以对老兵的嘲笑和不满一笑置之,并且虚心地向他们请教学习,他渴望战斗,但决不卤莽,这些并不是每一名出自西点军校的人都能做到的。


经过上一集的颠峰,第8集开始向平缓过度。导演在继续战争场面描写的前提下,把重点重新放回士兵的生活和心理状态。此时战争已接近尾声,所有人都期待着能早日返回家乡。而对于那些老兵来说,战争已经在他们心里留下了不可磨灭的创伤,也永远改变了他们。

① 韦伯斯特回来报道。一颗炸弹飞过来,在远方爆炸,他紧张地扑倒在地,马拉其开着玩笑说:“韦伯斯特,回来当兵让你紧张吗?”同时斯皮尔斯就站在原地盯着炸弹在眼前爆炸。

② 一名叫奇恩的士兵背着袋马铃薯在错误的时间出现在错误的地点,中弹牺牲。

③ 洗澡的时候,马拉其呆呆地站在那里,也许他在怀念离开的战友们,也许他想冲掉那些痛苦的回忆,可是它们就像梦魇一般萦绕不去。

④ 杰克森在侦察任务中,被自己的炸弹炸伤,在阴暗的地窖里痛苦地死去。所有士兵都为杰克森痛惜,对这次无谓的行动感到愤怒,一名士兵拔出枪准备打死抓来的俘虏,被琼斯少尉及时制止。

⑤ 一名受伤的俘虏被留在岸边,无助地等待死亡,韦伯斯特说也许应该给他一枪结束他的痛苦,马丁中士听不下去,气愤地离开。

⑥ 温特斯也对这种行动感到无奈,当他第二次接到渡河侦察的任务时,他决定不让自己的兄弟们再去无谓地牺牲,便叫尼克松写了份假报告说没有抓到俘虏。士兵们听到这个消息后都觉得不可思议,庆贺自己在战争即将结束时不必再去冒险。

⑦ 结尾处,韦伯斯特,写道:我怀疑在家乡的人知不知道,士兵们赢得这场战争所付出的代价。在美国,生活已一片欣欣向荣,赛车和夜总会开始流行,迈阿密海滩的酒店早已人满为患,而人们如何能了解士兵们在恐惧、痛苦、血泪中的牺牲,如果他们从未置身于诺曼底、巴斯托涅或哈根努。

9 Why We Fight

第9集,E连进入德国,战争基本结束。从本集以后都没有再出现战争场面,导演开始深入描写战争对士兵、平民,整个世界所带来的灾难,以及探讨关于战争的一些话题。这一集中的线索人物为尼克松。

本集采用了倒叙的拍摄手法,开场配合着贝多芬的悲凉的小提琴曲,展现在观者眼前的就是几乎被战争摧毁的德国,满目创痍的城市,坚强的德国平民悲伤地清理着残垣断壁,E连的士兵作壁上观,导演客观地从双方的士兵、新兵与老兵、平民与难民等多个方面展开本集。

尼克松,这个在战争中一枪未发的军官,一直过着放荡不羁的生活,他嗜酒如命,前几集中很难在他身上找到战争的痕迹,似乎是酒精使他与痛苦的经历绝缘。可这不是真的,酒精只是他拿来麻醉自己的工具。他会为牺牲的士兵难过,担心怎么给他们的家人写死讯,同时又对自己被降级漠不关心。当他得知他的妻子要和他离婚,并要求拿走全部家产包括他的狗,他怒不可揭,事实上也是战争毁了他的生活。尼克松愤世嫉俗的外表下依旧是柔弱善良的内心,否则那位纳粹遗孀发现他闯进家中的时候,他也不会默默地离去。

这集用了1/3的时间去描写恶名昭著的集中营。久经沙场的士兵看见集中营的惨状都感到震惊与悲愤,很难想象这些都是人类的罪恶。被解放的犹太人要么激动地亲吻解救他们的人,要么痛哭流涕地抱着亲人的尸体,而士兵们惊讶地见证了人类史上最令人发指的罪行,对于奥基夫一样的新兵,眼前的一切都让人难以接受。导演逼真地再现了集中营,使其成为全剧中最凄凉,最悲惨的场景。骨瘦如柴的难民,惨不忍睹的尸体永远地提醒我们不要重蹈覆辙,也最直接地回答了本集的标题。


① 蹦蹦跳跳的新兵奥基夫期待着空降柏林的战斗,这引发了老兵佩尔孔蒂的愤怒,他向奥基夫吼着说,现在是他在战争中过得最舒适的生活,别再期待什么空降柏林,他只想早点结束战争,因为他离开家乡已经两年了。

② 尼克松看了她妻子的来信,仿佛一瞬间把所有的怨气都发泄出来,他气得把钢盔砸向吉普车,怒吼:“那根本不是她的狗!那是我的狗,她要带走我的狗!”

③ 去阿尔卑斯山的途中,士兵们欢快地唱着美军的军歌《碧血如泉,取义成仁》"Blood upon the Risers",欢庆着战争即将结束。一路上,他们碰见了投降的德军成群地高昂行军,韦伯斯特情绪失控,怒骂他们:“去和福特和通用汽车问好吧,看看你们,你们只有马!把我们从半个地球拖过来,打乱我们的生活,这是为什么?”路过一个小仓库时,几名英军让三名德军战俘背跪着,然后枪毙了他们,奥基夫惊讶地望着佩尔孔蒂,佩尔孔蒂似笑非笑地回应他,一旁的韦伯斯特无奈地摇着头,列布格特却笑得很灿烂。

④ 尼克松闯进了一户人家,见桌上放着一名纳粹军官的遗像,便把它摔在地上。这时,屋里的女主人出现,愤怒地盯着他,尼克松什么也没说就离开了。他们第二次相遇是在集中营,那名妇女正狼狈地清理尸体,她底下头,愧于尼克松的眼神。

⑤ 奥基夫见到集中营的惨状更胜于战争的惨烈,他独自坐在一旁,眼神里充满无限的迷惘和无助。列布格特得知关在集中营里的都是自己的同胞,那种心痛无以言表。为了监督难民的进食,他被命令用德语向他们宣布所有人将会再关进去,他再也忍不住,掩面痛哭。

⑥ 结尾回到片头的场景,尼克松告诉大家希特勒在柏林开枪自杀,鲁兹说:“他三年前就应该这样做了,这会省去我们很多麻烦。”

这里的积分是指士兵退役所必须达到的分数,作为大结局的标题,它恰好道出战士们厌战和思乡的情绪,以及对和平生活的向往,也为本片画上完美的句号。线索人物回归到温特斯。

战争结束,E连作为占领军从纳粹发源地贝希特斯加登,展转到奥地利(此段的主题音乐是我最喜欢的)。而所有人也都尝试着这个战争到和平的过渡时期,他们开始和德国人和睦相处,开始计划未来的的生活,憧憬着和平的日子,每天也在为点数不够而焦头烂额,因为他们目睹的杀戮太多,没人在经历了九死一生的残酷战争后,还会盼望它再来。

可是战争留下的阴影并没有随即而停。几年来,他们都在为杀戮而生,当一切结束时,难免会产生方向的迷失,那种空虚感是可怕的,加上“士兵们唯一不缺的酒精和子弹”,结果是依旧没有停止的无谓伤亡。他们现在面临的艰难任务是重新评估自己的价值和自我认可。然而从托科阿到现在所造就的顽强精神也使他们大部分人成功地做到了。

值得一提的是本集中犹如仙境般的优美风景。E连所到之处都是欣欣向荣的金色阳光,这些都是战士们的付出换来的,是他们带来了曙光。这样绝美的画面作为结束和归宿再恰当不过了,不仅为能享受到这一切的人,也为那些牺牲的人,没有他们,这一切都只能是向往。


① “冲啊!骏马!”E连的战士们高喊口号,冲上鹰巢。这也许是全剧中最欢快的时刻,为了胜利而欢呼,这种最直接最单纯的喜悦,却有最震撼的效果。

② E连前往奥地利的途中,优美的湖光山色配合悠扬的音乐,一片宁静和谐。不管美军还是德军都放下了武器,走向各自的方向,少女们热情地跟士兵们打招呼,马拉其激动地说:“战争结束了!”

③ 一名德军上校向温特斯投降时说:“我在想,当战争结束时,像你我这样的人命运将会如何。”温特斯望着他,不知如何回答。他把随身佩枪交给温特斯时又说:“我宁愿把它交给军人。”投降都这么有气节,真的很令人敬佩。

④ 温特斯申请调往太平洋前线,一名长官接见他,战争的回忆也一点一滴地浮现眼前:D日夺取大炮的战斗,在那里牺牲的霍尔是他见到的第一个阵亡的战友;在荷兰,他杀死一名年轻的德军士兵,那名士兵的笑容从此困扰着他的生活,他也在那里开了最后一枪;在巴斯托涅,他们挨过了敌人疯狂的轰炸和最危机的时刻……

⑤ 列布格特和韦伯斯特凭着难民的指证,去杀一名集中营的军官。韦伯斯特受不了这样的事,一人站在屋外。最后,那名军官在逃跑时被打死。尸体就横在风景如画的群山之间。

⑥ 韦伯斯特站岗时,遇见一名腿部残疾的德军士兵,便帮他找了辆便车,并把车主放在后坐的行李都扔掉,让那名士兵坐上去。军人之间的情感是相通的,无关立场。

⑦ 格兰特中士头部中枪,在救护站里,斯皮尔斯一直握着他的手,医生说格兰特没救了,他却不肯放弃,最后找到一位德军军医动手术,挽救了格兰特的生命。抓到那名肇事者后,他拿出手枪,颤抖地指着那个人的头,他不敢相信这么优秀的士兵会遇到这样的事情。最终他还是放下了手枪,也许他不想再看见任何无谓的杀戮。

⑧ 温特斯在接受一名德国将军的投降时,遇见了索贝尔,温特斯要求索贝尔向他重新敬礼,并说:“敬礼是看军衔,不是看人。”而那名将军对士兵的演讲是全剧的升华和总结,是E连真实的写照,战争的酸甜苦辣都浓缩在这里(CCTV版的删掉了这些)。

⑨ 片尾,E连的兄弟们酣畅淋漓地打着棒球,仿佛要把战争和所有烦恼都像球一样痛快地打去,迎接新的生活。旁白叙述着士兵们战后的生活,也许有好有坏,但至少是和平的生活,至少不用再去面对残酷的杀戮和死亡。天下无不散之宴席,每当看到这里我都会庆幸他们能过着和我们一样的生活,却也会有无限的不舍与惆怅,甚至有种自私的想法:如果这一切不会结束……

而老年的温特斯本人在最后结尾说他的孙子问他是不是英雄,而他的回答则让我对E连敬畏之情达到了顶点:

“你的爷爷不是英雄,但在一个英雄的连队!!!”
